2026年10月22日（木）から11月3日（火祝）まで、gallery fumotoにて、クラフト作家・上原かなえによる個展「TRANSPARENCY − 光と構造」を開催いたします。

長野県御代田町を拠点に活動する上原かなえさん。自ら育てたライ麦の麦藁を使い、北欧の伝統装飾「ヒンメリ」を制作しています。

細い藁を組み合わせて生まれる作品は、空間の中に静かに佇みながら、光の角度や風の流れによって刻々と表情を変えていきます。やわらかな光や時間の移ろいを、繊細な構造によって映し出すヒンメリ。その透明感のある姿には、自然素材ならではの温かさと、手仕事の美しさが宿っています。

gallery fumotoでは2回目の開催となる本展では、新たな作品を含むヒンメリやオーナメントなど、上原さんの丁寧な手仕事から生まれた作品をご紹介いたします。

From Thursday, October 22 to Tuesday, November 3, 2026, gallery fumoto will present “TRANSPARENCY – Light and Structure,” a solo exhibition by craft artist Kanae Uehara.

Based in Miyota Town, Nagano Prefecture, Kanae Uehara creates himmeli, a traditional Nordic ornament, using rye straw that she grows herself.

Her works are created by carefully assembling delicate pieces of straw, resulting in structures that quietly inhabit a space while continuously changing their expressions depending on the angle of light and the movement of air.

Through their intricate structures, Himmeli reflect the softness of light and the passage of time. Their transparent and delicate appearance embodies both the warmth of natural materials and the beauty of handcrafted work.

This will be Uehara’s second exhibition at gallery fumoto. The exhibition will feature Himmeli and ornaments, including new works, all created through her meticulous and thoughtful craftsmanship.

[ Message from the Artist ]

ヒンメリは、細い麦わらの線で空間にかたちを与えながら、その向こう側を隠しません。構造の中を光が通り抜け、そこに影が生まれます。

昨年フィンランドで作品を発表した際、作品の「透明性」について言葉をいただいたことをきっかけに、あらためて自分の制作を見つめるようになりました。

私は、世界各地で受け継がれてきた麦藁細工と、そこに込められた知恵や造形を探求しています。作品に使うのは、自ら育てたライ麦です。春に芽吹き、夏に収穫したライ麦を、その年の手仕事として形にしています。素材がどこから来て、どのような時間を経てここにあるのか。その背景まで含めて、作品の一部として見えてくるものでありたいと思っています。

今回は、ヒンメリの幾何学的な構造に、これまで取り組んできた曲線の表現を重ねながら、光、影、線、空間の関係をさらに探りました。

透明でありながら、確かに空間をつくること。その境界にある形を、探っています。

Himmeli gives form to space through the lines of delicate straw, while never concealing what lies beyond. Light passes through its structure, creating shadows that gently emerge within the space.

When I presented my work in Finland last year, I received comments about the “transparency” of my pieces. This experience led me to look once again at my own creative practice and reflect on what I seek to express.

I explore straw crafts that have been passed down in different regions around the world, along with the wisdom and forms embedded within them. The material I use is rye that I grow myself. The rye sprouts in spring, is harvested in summer, and is transformed into works through the handcrafting process of that same year.

Where a material comes from, and the time it has taken to arrive here—these elements are also part of the work itself. I hope they can be felt as an essential part of each piece.

For this exhibition, I have further explored the relationship between light, shadow, line, and space by combining the geometric structures of Himmeli with the curved forms I have continued to develop in my practice.

To create something that is transparent, yet undeniably forms a space.

I continue to search for forms that exist along this boundary.

上原かなえ | Kanae Uehara

クラフト作家。長野県御代田町を拠点に、フィンランドのヒンメリを中心に、国内外に受け継がれる手仕事や素材について探求。収穫したライ麦を作品や暮らしに生かす「MIYOTA ライ麦ストロープロジェクト」を主宰し、作品制作のほか、教室やワークショップを通して手仕事の魅力を伝えている。

Kanae Uehara | Craft Artist

A craft artist based in Miyota Town, Nagano Prefecture. She explores traditional handicrafts and materials passed down both in Japan and around the world, with a particular focus on Finnish Himmeli.

She leads the “MIYOTA Rye Straw Project,” which incorporates harvested rye straw into both her artworks and everyday life. In addition to creating works, she shares the beauty and value of craftsmanship through classes and workshops.
