【軽井沢｜gallery fumoto】チェア作家小島優「椅子展」開催のお知らせ

2026年7月9日(木)から7月20日(月)まで兵庫県丹波市を拠点に活動するチェア作家小島優さんの椅子展を開催します。

10代の頃に渡英し、現地のウィンザーチェア工房にて修行を重ね、現在はチェア作家としてウィンザーチェアを制作されている小島優さん。ウィンザーチェアは17世紀後半、イギリスの庶民の暮らしの中から生まれ、その後上流階級へと広がっていった椅子です。素朴でありながらも温かみのある独特のフォルムは、今もなお多くの人々に親しまれています。

gallery fumotoでは今回が2度目の開催となります。ひとつひとつ丁寧に仕立てられた、多様な表情をもつウィンザーチェアやスツールが並びます。

初夏の軽井沢にて木のぬくもりや座り心地の違いを、ぜひ実際に座り比べながらお楽しみいただき、お気に入りの一脚との出会いを見つけていただけましたら幸いです。

From Thursday, July 9, 2026 to Monday, July 20, 2026, we will be holding a chair exhibition by chair maker Yutaka Kojima, based in Tanba City, Hyogo Prefecture.

Yutaka Kojima spent his teenage years in the UK, where he trained at a Windsor chair workshop. He is now a chair maker specializing in Windsor chairs. The Windsor chair originated in late 17th-century England within the lives of common people and later spread to the upper classes. Its simple yet warm and distinctive form continues to be cherished by many today.

This will be the second exhibition held at gallery fumoto. The exhibition will feature a variety of carefully crafted Windsor chairs and stools, each with its own unique character.

We invite you to visit Karuizawa in early summer and experience the warmth of wood and the differences in seating comfort by trying each piece for yourself. We would be delighted if you could find a chair that feels like the perfect fit for you.

私はウィンザーチェアを作り始めて30年以上になります。

近年は、ウィンザーチェアの原点のひとつでもあるウェールズの椅子に強く惹かれ、18世紀頃に小さな工房で作られていたであろうウェリッシュチェアを手本にした椅子作りに取り組んでいます。

当時の職人たちの仕事に思いを馳せながら木を削り、椅子を形にしていく時間は、私にとって何よりも幸福なひとときです。

会場では、ぜひ椅子を見て、触れて、そして座ってみてください。

私が椅子作りの中で感じている喜びや心地よさが、少しでも皆様に伝われば幸いです。

I have been making Windsor chairs for over 30 years.

In recent years, I have been strongly drawn to Welsh chairs, which are considered one of the origins of the Windsor chair. I have been working on chair-making inspired by the Welsh chairs (Welsh-style chairs) that were likely made in small workshops around the 18th century.

Carving wood while reflecting on the work of craftsmen from that time, and shaping each chair, is for me the most fulfilling and joyful moment.

At the venue, I hope you will take the opportunity to look at the chairs, touch them, and sit in them.

It would bring me great joy if even a small part of the pleasure and comfort I feel in making these chairs could be conveyed to you.

小島優｜チェア作家

1973年兵庫県生まれ。1991年に渡英し、椅子作家ビルハッドフィールド氏に師事。1993年に神戸にて試作展を開催。1995年に神戸ギャラリーミウラにて個展以後、各地のギャラリー、デパートで個展グループ展を開催。2010年丹波篠山まちなみアートフェスティバルに参加。2017年に長野県立信濃美術館、日本民藝館にて開催された「ウィンザーチェア日本人が愛した英国の椅子」の選考委員として参加。

Atsushi Kojima | Chair Maker

Born in 1973 in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. In 1991, he moved to the United Kingdom and studied under chair maker Bill Hadfield.

In 1993, he held a prototype exhibition in Kobe. In 1995, he held a solo exhibition at Gallery Miura in Kobe, and has since presented solo and group exhibitions at galleries and department stores across Japan.

In 2010, he participated in the Tamba-Sasayama Townscape Art Festival. In 2017, he served as a selection committee member for the exhibition “Windsor Chairs: The British Chair Loved by the Japanese,” held at the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum and the Japan Folk Crafts Museum.
