【KAMAKURA meet】

KAMAKURA meet
We are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition “Soba Choko: One Hundred Acts of Mending” by lacquer mending artist Toshiharu Sakuma, featuring early Imari and Ko-Imari porcelain from the 17th to 19th centuries, restored through the art of urushi lacquer repair.
The exhibition will run from Friday, October 30, through Monday, November 9, 2026.
Soba choko cups, originally fired between the 17th and 19th centuries, have endured the passage of time, bearing chips and cracks. Through the hands of lacquer mending artist Toshiharu Sakuma, these vessels are given a renewed presence.
This exhibition presents 100 soba choko cups restored using the traditional art of kintsugi.
Rather than concealing the chips and cracks etched into each vessel, they are carefully repaired with urushi lacquer and brought to life as golden landscapes. This process reveals a new beauty that goes beyond simply restoring what has been lost.
We invite you to take a closer look at the quiet presence of these vessels, which have lived through centuries, and the meticulous work of mending layered upon them. Each piece possesses a unique expression, shaped by the painted motifs and forms of Ko-Imari porcelain, together with the delicate lines of kintsugi. We hope you will enjoy discovering these individual works firsthand.
We look forward to welcoming you.

In conjunction with 100 Mended Soba Choko at KAMAKURA meet, a special opening, Rediscovering Kintsugi in the Interplay of Light and Shadow, will be held at a separate venue, the Former Kawakita Residence Annex (formerly the Watsuji Residence), from Saturday, October 31 to Tuesday, November 3, 2026 (national holiday).
Please note: The venue will be closed on Monday, November 2.
Light and shadow have long played an important role in Japanese architecture and spatial design. Within the quiet atmosphere of this historic residence, visitors will have an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of kintsugi—the traditional art of repairing ceramics with lacquer and gold.
Alongside the exhibition at KAMAKURA meet, we hope you will enjoy exploring Toshiharu Sakuma’s world of urushi lacquer mending in these two venues, each offering its own distinctive atmosphere.
We warmly invite you to visit both venues.
