From Friday, June 19, 2026 to Monday, June 29, 2026, we will be holding a solo exhibition titled “Shinra – Expressions of the Forest” by basketry artist Akane Kumagai, based in Oguni Town, Yamagata Prefecture.

Akane Kumagai creates beautiful woven baskets using materials gifted by the mountains of Oguni, such as akebi vine and walnut. Under the name “kegoya,” derived from the local dialect word for barns and work sheds (“kegoya”), she works as a basketry artist.

The exhibition title, “Shinra – Expressions of the Forest,” reflects the idea of “shinra,” a term describing trees growing densely and continuously side by side, also conveying the sense of “many things lined up together.” The concept expresses a desire for viewers to experience Kumagai’s baskets—woven and arranged in succession—as overlapping with the expressions of trees in the forest.

The exhibition will feature akebi and walnut hand baskets that add character to fashion, as well as market baskets that enrich everyday life. We will present works that bring color to daily living.

We invite you to experience the natural texture and distinctive radiance of Kumagai’s works firsthand.

We sincerely look forward to welcoming you.

I create baskets using akebi vine and walnut bark in Oguni Town, Yamagata Prefecture.

The walnut bark is harvested from young branches of trees that are pruned to encourage regeneration. Among these, the thicker bark from branches closer to the trunk is woven into wide strips, creating baskets that are both substantial and rustic, reminiscent of European wooden baskets. The thinner bark from slender branches is finely woven, resulting in baskets that are supple and lightweight, like leather bags.

I would be delighted if you could enjoy encountering these baskets, which are woven to preserve the natural expressions of the plants themselves.
